Learn the Key Strategies to any Presentation.

Unless you grab the audience’s attention in the first 30 seconds of your presentation, metaphorically your presentation is dead because people will stop listening. Thus knowing and instantly engaging your audience is vital to your success.

  • engage the audience immediately with a strong introduction. The first thing you say is important – it sets the first impression for the audience – that is, ‘I will sleep now’ or ‘I will pay attention’. Understand the importance of building a story around your introduction because it commonly is an effective method of engaging the audience – laughter can be the medicine;
  • understand what an ‘Effective Speaker’ is using 5 Speaking Rules;
  • speak from Keywords to the audience rather than ‘speaking to the presentation’;
  • understand your audience cannot read and listen at the same time;
  • practice, practice & practice your presentation.

Learn the Key Strategies to Preparing Effective Presentation Slides.

Plan your presentation effectively thinking carefully about your objectives. What should be the conclusion? How does it add value to the organisation? This means selecting an appropriate structure and style based upon knowing your audience & subject. For example, are you selling a concept or presenting technical information? Do your research well:

  • Think I, B, C – Introduction, Body, Conclusion. Mind Maps’ are an easy method for planning Presentations. Follow the six effective Writing Rules;
  • Introduction – aim for a strong Introduction engaging the reader and capturing their attention;
  • Body of Presentation – continue the story;
  • Strong Conclusions– or no one will take action after your presentation.

Above all else, keep each slide simple using highlighted keywords presenting one logical idea at a time.

Technical Report Writing Course

Purpose:

  • These lessons focus on illustrating the formal method of  Report Writing.

Lesson Outcomes:

Regardless of whether the Industry, formal reports follow a standard ‘Best Practice’ format.

Writers should understand that an effective Report Summary and Recommendations Section are vitally important. Busy Managers will commonly only read these two sections and it is unlikely immediate or prudent action will be taken if these sections are missing from a report.

This lesson structure has proven effective:

  • reports should be organized in the ‘Best Practice’ format. Frequently this is not well understood. At a minimum, the main sections you would expect to find a formal report are: Summary, Introduction, Method, Findings, Conclusions, Recommendations & Appendix.
  • ensure reports are not difficult and time consuming to read. This typically happens because the Summary Page has been omitted. A Summary is a short overview of the Report – Introduction, Conclusions and Recommendations – the important information on one page. It should be easy for the reader to read and understand. Fail with this objective and the report may not be read. Managers decide if they will read a report based upon the summary content;
  • ensure the ‘Apparent Problem’ versus ‘Real Problem’ is made clear so the reader does not have to research the entire report detail to find this information. The Summary should help the reader distinguish between the ‘situation symptoms, apparent problems and the real problem’;
  • ensure Recommendations & Conclusions are stated clearly without the writer having a fear of stating their own beliefs;
  • ensure there is not too much information in the body of the report with writers’ mistakenly believing that justifying their skill or knowledge is a substitute for a well written report. Detailed supporting information should be in the Appendix;
  • writers should apply the 6 Effective Writing rules.

The result of not writing with such a methodology is that management is unable to quickly recognise a potential organisation problem, risk, opportunity or make a quick decision. This is because busy Managers do not always have time to read entire reports searching for and justifying if a conclusion is valid.
